Bulls On Parade 09 - Fight To WinNovember 13, 2009

On Friday the 13th the Stampede which is normally known for it’s country western dancing and atmosphere played host to the first ever Fight to Win modified muay thai kick boxing event and it did not disappoint. 9 bouts of action on an all muay thai fight card with many of the premier fight gyms represented in front of a capacity crowd.

Bout 1
Albert Martinez vs Craig Keaton.
Plenty of action in the opening bout of the evening but it was apparent early on that the leg kicks and tenacity of Albert Martinez would prove to be the decisive edge when he continued to work the leg of his opponent when just seconds into the second round Martinez won the bout by TKO by virtue of the devastating leg kicks that rendered his opponent unable to get up from a standing eight count. Winner Albert martinez at :15 of R2.

Bout 2
Richard Smith vs Gabe Alvarado.
Smith opened with good combinations with occasional leg and mid section kicks to keep Alavado off balance and as a result it would be Richard Smith that would wear his opponent down to get the victory when Alvarado was unable to continue. Winner Richard Smith.

Bout 3
Jonathan Wyderko vs Josh Martinez.
The action picked up in bout 3 and Jonathan Wyderko did a nice job of putting together good leg and punch combinations and his opponent Josh Martinez did a nice job trying to weather the storm. In the end it was not enough. At 1:30 of round 2 Wyderko gets the TKO vitory.

Bout 4
Melissa Myers vs Ashley Villasana
In the only womens bout on the evening these two women put on a nice display of just about all you would want to see in a fight. At times great technique, heart, perserverence, and a willingness to continue to the end. In the opening roound it was the taller Villasena that appeared to perhaps have an advantage in a closely contested round. Round two saw the spirit of Melissa Myers take off as she got aggressive moving forward with solid 2 and 4 punch combinations with an occasional mix of kicks. Round three was much the same but Villasena still hanging tough. The bell rang to end the bout and it was up to the jugdes to score the fight and they made the decsion that Melissa Myers earned the victory. Myers moves her record to 2-0. It should be noted that Ashley Villansena will have a solid future ahead. Seth Bregman made the announcement at the conclusion of the bout that she is just 17 years of age.

Bout 5
Travis Gearhardt vs Kody Faulk
Travis entered the ring representing Easton Brazilian Ju Jitsu and Faulk the Nu Breed Malisha. This fight would be summed up by alot of action in a short period of time. The technique displayed by Travis Gearhardt was very precise with his front kicks and consistant punch combinations. Faulk tried vehemently to keep up and Gearhardt simply wore him down with the technique to get a TKO victory.

Bout 6
Jacob Alberts vs Derek Mainus
This bout was contested at 135 pounds. Early on it appeared that Mainus had a slight adavntage with solid puches to the face of Alberts and toward the end of round one it appeared that Mainus was gaining confidence and momantum. The first round ended. To start the 2nd round Mainus continued to try and secure an advantage with his aggression and seemed to be doing everything needed to try and get the advantage. At the time it was Alberts who laded a text book head kick to knock out Derek Mainus. In a quick reversal of fotunes it was Jacob Alberts who may have been slightly behind at the time reversed everything with his knock out victory in the second round.

Bout 7
Bernardo Fanti vs Matt Kaufmann
This bout was in the 170 pound bracket and from the opening bell it was Bernardo Fanti that was the agressor and landed several techniques at will. Matt Kaufmann began to land a little bit when the first round came to a halt. Round one went to Fanti. During the break Brian Zehler, cornering for Kaufmann belted out some intense instructions and it paid off. In the second round Kaufmann looked like a different fighter and began to land uppercuts, and punch combinations with spinning back fists. The two fighters wnet back and forth and round two was over. From the start of round three both fighters looked fatigued but it appeared that perhaps Fanti had lost a step to to the frantic pace of the first two rounds. Both fighters were swinging rather wildly toward the end of round three and the bell sounded. MAtt Kaufmann scored the victory by decision.

Bout 8
John Hideman vs Ricky Vasquez
Johnny “Cage” as he was anoounced di a fine job to open the bout by using well placed tiep kicks and clinch work. Both fighters went through a “feel out” stage in round one and it was over. Round one favored John Hideman. Round two began and Ricky Vasquez did a nice job of landing punches to the face of Hideman and eventually knocked him down scoring the standing 8 count. Round three went much the same and while it was a close fight in technique and constant action, it would be the knock down scored by Ricky Vasquez that would make the difference. When the judges score cards were read to the crowd by ring announcer Al Palone, Ricky Vasquez would secure the unanamous decision victory.

Bout 9
Nick Laney vs Corey Wilson.
Nick Laney would enter the ring to make his debut in modified muay thai kick boxing after having established a 5-0 record in MMA. Corey Wilson on the other hand was 3-1 in kick boxing. From the bell it was Wilson that showed great head movement to avoid any real damage and then Laney picked up the pace and did a masterful job of cutting off the ring thwarting the efforts of Wilson which would allow him to set up the necessary combinations he needed to take control of the main event fight. Round one ends and fans were treated to a second round where Nick Laney started putting his technique and power together and knocked Wilson down and the fight ended there. Nick Laney is successful in his modifed muay thai debut with the victory.

Of Note
A great argument can be made of the fact that kick boxing is alive and well in Colorado from the looks of a show which took place in a new venue to the promotion on a Friday night where the weather at times may have scared some fans away-but not in this case. Another solid event for Fight to Win with a great crowd that seemed to really enjoy the smooth pace of the show and the great result. A nine bout card where one third of the bouts went to a decision. Highly regarded referee, Judge, Coach, Cecil Peoples was there to referee the event with others. Mike Nickels, and Eliot Marshall there to support their fighters. Some of the finest MMA camps showcasing their students which included Colorado Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Easton BJJ, Infinite MMA, Z’s Training Gym and more.

Fight of the Night: John Hideman vs Ricky Vasquez (although the others that went to a decsion were close as well)
KO of the Night: Jacob Alberts. A fight ending high head kick that shocked the crowd.
Ring General: Travis Gearhardt. He cut the ring off as well as may have been seen in some time.
You have alot of “Heart”: To the two women that put on such a nice display.

Looking forward to the next. Until then check out this site for all of the best in combat sports.
