Heavy Hitters – Results

Heavy HittersThe softball country venue in Denver, Colorado hosted the Fight To Win promotion’s Heavy Hitters show June 18, 2010.  This was a mixed event with three MMA bout and the rest of the card being kickboxing matches including one women’s bout.

Main event: RORY O’ FARRELL VS MICHAEL MOSER in MMA for the Fight To Win elimination heavyweight title.  O’ Farrell got a quick takedown into side control.  From there he used his GNP to set up a transition to full mount and once on top he continued to flurry with strikes to get the title winning TKO at :43 of round one.

NICK LANEY VS NICK ANDERSON in MMA in the Co-main event.  Both fighters were busy early working from the outside with strikes with each landing well with punches and kicks.  Anderson tried to pull guard but Laney landed in full mount and used his GNP to set up an armbar attempt that Anderson defended until the bell sounded.  Round two had each fighter landing hard shots before Laney got in a head kick that hurt Anderson.  Laney then followed with a body kick that dropped Anderson.  On the ground Laney landed several punches to get the TKO win at :59 of round two.

TYRONE WRIGHT VS SEBASTIAN  WHITE in MMA.  White quickly initiated a takedown, but Wright landed in half mount and worked strong GNP to get the TKO win at 1:31 of round one.

The rest of the fights were kickboxing matches.

BEN DE ANDA VS RYAN WALL.  Both fighters landed hard body kicks with each also scoring with a superman punch.  De Anda then landed an accidental low blow and because Wall was unable to continue and the strike was accidental and in the first round the bout was ruled a no contest.

MINDA SPOONE VS KIM CHRISTODAL.  Christodal came out strong with a varied kicking attack before Spoone found her punching range and landed well.  The round ended with both fighters having a strong flurry.  Round two had both landing solid strikes throughout the round  with each mixing their attack well between punches and kicks.  Round three saw Spoone land hard punches and Christodal getting in several hard side kicks.  Spoone then had several hard punch flurries and she ended each flurry with a solid kick and the round ended with the fighters clinched.  The scorecards determined the winner and by split decision it was Minda Spoone.

JOEL ISHMAEL VS JONATHAN WYDERKO.  There was strong striking from each fighter to open the round  with there being a momentary stoppage due to Wyderco landing a kick to a downed fighter.  The fighters restarted and the round ended with Wyderco landing a prolonged barrage of knee strikes in the clinch.  Round two saw prolonged clinch fighting with both fighters staying active on the inside.  Mid-round Wyderco again had a strong clinch attack landing many hard knees.  Round three had Wyderco pressing forward and landing well with knees to the body and legs while Ishmael stayed busy with counterpunching.  The bell ended the fight, the scorecards were totaled and the winner by an unanimous decision was Jonathan Wyderco.

ALONZO GARCIA VS SAMUEL FERNANDEZ.  Garcia had a good punch flurry early that hurt Fernandez, but Fernandez answered with good combinations and the rest of the round played out with punches from the outside and knees from both while clinched.  Round two  had Garcia landing punch/kick combinations that hurt Fernandez but Fernandez maintained his composure  and the rest of the round was a slugfest with each fighter able to stagger the other.  Round three had Garcia coming out with a relentless striking flurry and each time Fernandez seemed done he gathered himself and landed combinations to keep himself in the bout.  Finally Garcia landed a solid right hook and it was enough to get him the TKO win at 1:26 of round three.

SHAWN BOOKOUT VS GABRIEL MARTIN.  Each fighter showed hard kicks early, then Bookout was knocked down for an 8 count.  Martinez ended the round with several strong punch flurries.  Round two had each fighter land hard kicks before good clinch work from both.  To end the round the fighters had several good back and forth exchanges.  Round three had both fighters throwing good punch/kick combinations with Bookout able to land damaging leg kicks.  The scorecards were read and the winner was Shawn Bookout by unanimous decision.

JARED MERCADO VS NICK MAHAFFEY.  The fight had even exchanges with Mahaffey landing striking from the outside while Mercado favored the clinch.  Round two began with punch flurries from Mercado that he used to set up clinch fighting while Mahaffey looked to counter strike while on the outside.  Round three had Mercado using low kick/punch combinations and Mahaffey using the overhand right to counter.  The scorecards determined the winner and by way of unanimous decision it was Jared Mercado.

JORDAN LAMB VS ROY MARTINEZ.  Lamb’s first strike of the fight was an accidental low blow.  The referee took a point from Lamb and to make up for the lost point Lamb used crisp technical striking to get a knock down for an eight count.  Lamb ended the round with a strong right hook.  Round two had Martinez losing two points early for a knee to the head after already having been warned.  The rest of the round was strong back and forth striking from both combatants.  Round three had Martinez scoring a knock down for an 8 count and then he used his kicks to set up a punch flurry that again knocked Lamb down for an 8 count.  The fighters then went toe-to-toe  before Martinez got a final knock down to score the TKO win.

ROMAN CARSON VS BRIAN COURSEY.  Both fighters came out and went toe-to-toe with each able to hurt the other and Carson flurrying strong to end the round.  Round two again had both fighters being very aggressive with Carson landing an uppercut that scored him the KO win at :37 of round two.

“Of The Night” moments.

Chin(s) of the night goes to Alonzo Garcia and Samuel Fernandez for their granite jaws that kept both of them in the fight well into the third round.

Technique of the night goes to Jonathan Wyderco for his unrelenting knee strikes that gave him the edge in his bout.

KO of the night goes to Roman Carson for the uppercut that got him the KO win in the first round.

Fight of the night goes to Alonzo Garcia and Samuel Fernandez for their back and forth fight where each hurt the other and where both displayed good offense and defense.
