Fight To Win: Super Heroes

Saturday May 19, 2012 at the National Western Complex the Fight To Win promotion held their, “Super Heroes” themed event. There were 12 bouts total with three titles, one women’s kickboxing fight and eight professional fights.

Main event: Chase Hackett vs. Adam Schindler for the 155 lb. professional title. The fighters worked hard strikes including a head kick from Schindler before they clinched and Schindler got a takedown. The fighters traded positions several times before getting back to standing. On their feet Hackett threw a head kick that was trapped by Schindler, but when Schindler pressed forward for the takedown his knee twisted and he suffered an injury that kept him from being able to continue. The fight was stopped and TKO due to injury at 1:54 of round one.

Co-Main event: Josh Cavan vs. Steven Simmons in a 170 lb. professional fight. Simmons opened with a leg kick that Cavan trapped and used to set up the clinch. Several times Cavan got a takedown and several times Simmons worked back to standing. The rounds final takedown allowed Cavan to work GNP from side control to end the round. Round two began with Cavan using a punch/kick combination to set up a takedown. On the ground Cavan went from mount to back control in order to set in the fight winning RNC with the tapout coming at :39 of round two.

Adam Stroup vs. Todd Meredith in a 185 lb. professional fight. After several hard leg kicks from Meredith the fighters had an almost all striking round with Stroup able to control the clinch and drop Meredith. Meredith looked to be out but the follow up GNP by Stroup was not enough to warrant a stoppage and Meredith worked back to standing. Several times Stroup landed a hard series of knees from the Thai clinch but each time Meredith was able to answer and try for takedowns to end the round. Round two was an all standing Muay Thai fight in 4 oz. gloves with each throwing hard, technical and precise strikes with both fighters able to hurt the other. However, each time one fighter was hurt he was able to pressure forward to remain in the fight. Round three was more very aggressive and hard striking from both with Meredith rolling once for a leg lock that was defended. After scrambling to standing the fighters again traded hard punches and kicks with Stroup working several times for a takedown that was always defended by Meredith. With ten seconds left Meredith drove for and got a takedown to end the fight. The scorecards were read and the winner by unanimous decision was Todd Meredith.

Josh Huber vs. Manuel Gallardo in a 145 lb. professional fight. Very quickly Gallardo shot for a takedown, Huber however sprawled out and spent a prolonged time working knees from the top. Several times Gallardo worked to scramble, but always Huber was able to maintain a good position. In the final scramble Huber attained back control and set in the RNC for the submission victory at 4:12 of round one.

Matt Simms vs. Alvino Montoya in a 165 lb. professional fight. The fighters looked to strike early with Simms landing solid kicks and hard punch flurries. Off of the cage Montoya got a takedown but Simms scored a sweep and worked GNP until Montoya gave up his back. From back control Simms worked more strikes to set up the fight winning RNC with the tapout coming at 2:21 of round one.

Vellore Caballero vs. Johnny Torres in a 145 lb. professional fight. The fighters traded from the outside before Torres used his punches to set up the clinch. 3-4 times Caballero separated and each time Torres pressured forward, finally getting the takedown. On the mat the fighters worked for position until the referee stood them. On the restart Caballero landed a jumping knee, but Torres continued forward, got a takedown and used solid GNP to get the KO win at 4:49 of round one.

Josh Goldberger vs. Michael Mathews in a 185 professional fight. The fighters went to the mat early when Goldberger trapped a kick but Mathews was able to get a sweep. From his back Goldberger threatened multiple times with armbars and triangle chokes, but Mathews slammed out of an armbar and evaded the other submissions to get a sweep to work GNP before being swept himself as the round ended. Round two went to the mat early due to a Goldberger takedown. Once on the mat Goldberger controlled position, worked GNP and threatened with upper body submissions all round while Mathews worked strikes from his back and tried for escapes. Round three also went to the mat immediately with Goldberger again able to control position all round and work strikes and submission attempts from side control, side control and back mount; which is where the round ended with Goldberger working for an RNC. The scorecards were read and the winner by unanimous decision was Josh Goldberger.

Gabe Beaupurthy vs. Roger Minton in a 265 lb. professional fight. The fighters clinched off of the initial striking exchange and Beaupurthy scored a lateral drop to get it to the mat. After settling into side control Beaupurthy set in a fight winning Americana with the tapout coming at :57 of round one.

Joey Banks vs. Jeremy Martinez in a 145 lb. professional fight. The fighters traded hard shots early and Banks took top position after defending a takedown attempt and he flurried with GNP. The action was stopped after an accidental back of the head strike and Martinez was given time to recover. On the restart Banks landed a flying knee followed by hard punches and head kicks. Martinez again shot for a takedown and again Banks flurried with GNP, this time to get the TKO win at :39 of round one.

Lauren Sugihara vs. Crystal Parrish in an elimination 115 lb. kickboxing title fight. The fighters traded strikes from the outside where Sugihara was able to use her height and reach advantage as well as inside where they both worked knees, uppercuts and body punches. Round two was mainly striking from the outside with both landing solid strikes and some work in close where Parrish had her best punches of the fight. Round three was each fighter working into and out of range with combinations until 20 seconds left when they both turned up the pace and aggression to finish with strong combinations. The scorecards were read and the title winner by unanimous decision was Lauren Sugihara.

J. Keven Hernandez vs. Dominic Garkow in an elimination division 145 lb. title fight. The fighters probed with strikes until Hernandez pressured Garkow into the cage and landed a long flurry of punches and knees to the body and legs. The fighters separated and came to the center and Garkow tried to duck a punch but Hernandez took him to the mat, secured back control and set in the title winning RNC at 2:31 of round one.

Nick Defoire vs. Gabe Flores in an elimination 125 lb. fight. The fighters probed with strikes before Flores used his punches to set up several takedown attempts. On the third try Flores got it to the mat and quickly went to back control. Defoire defended against GNP and RNC attempts until the bell ended the round. Round two saw Flores clinch to try for a takedown immediately but Defoire defended and the round played out with Defoire landing punches from the outside and Flores trying but not having success with his takedowns until just as the bell ended the round. Round three had Defoire landing his best punches and kicks of the fight until Flores got it to the mat. Defoire controlled position on the ground and worked solid strikes until they came to their feet. From standing they traded hard shots until Flores again got a takedown and both fighters scrambled and worked GNP to end the fight. The scorecards were read and the winner by unanimous decision was Nick Defoire.

“Of The Night” moments:
Submission of the night goes to Gabe Beaupurthy for his Americana win coming in less than one minute.

KO of the night goes to Johnny Torres for his first round GNP KO.

Fight of the night goes to Adam Stroup and Todd Meredith for their three round back and forth battle that showcased the talent, toughness and heart of both fighters. This fight is clearly a fight of the year candidate.
