Fight To Win: “Monsters Brawl”

Friday night November 2, 2012 at the National Western Complex the Fight To Win promotion held their Monsters Brawl MMA event. The night had 12 fights including one kickboxing fight, two title fights and two professional fights.

 

Main event: Josh Goldberger vs. Ian Berg in a 185 lb. professional fight. Round one had both fighters throwing hard strikes and each landing well. Goldberger momentarily had the fight on the mat, but Berg escaped the submission attempts and came back to standing. As the round went on Berg landed solid combinations while Goldberger looked to take it to the mat. Round two was nearly entirely standing with both fighters able to land hard punches and punishing body kicks on the other. Round three began with hard striking and an increased pace from both fighters with each able to land damaging strikes on the other. Goldberger got a takedown off of the cage and spent the last part of the round working GNP from mount, then back control as Berg rolled to escape. The scorecards were read and the winner by split decision was Ian Berg.

Michael Mathews vs. Canaan Grigsby in a 185 lb. professional fight. Hard strikes were traded before Grigsby took the fight to the mat where he controlled position and worked solid GNP. Mathews worked to escape and off of a scramble Grigsby let him stand. On their feet each landed solid punches on the other before Grigsby again took it to the mat to work GNP to end the round. Round two was a very back and forth round, both on the feet and on the ground. Each was able to land solid strikes on the other, reverse the other on the ground and both landed with GNP. Round three saw Grigsby land his best punches of the fight with a flurry that rocked Mathews. Mathews recovered, clinched and got a takedown. On the mat the fighters worked for position with Grigsby able to maintain control on top while Mathews threatened with armlock submissions from the bottom. Grigsby escaped and ended the fight working striking from mount. The scorecards were read and the winner by unanimous decision was Canaan Grigsby.

Jeff Estrada vs. Nick Brown in a 185 lb. title fight. The fight went to the mat by way of a takedown initiated by Brown, but Estrada got the reversal on the throw to end on top. On the ground Estrada worked from the top with GNP all round while Brown was very active with armbar and triangle submission attempts. Round two had strikes thrown by both fighters before a clinch on the fence allowed Estrada to score a throw. On the mat Brown again threatened with submission attempts while Estrada worked GNP. Finally it was the ground attack of Brown that proved superior as he closed off the triangle to get the title winning tapout at 2:10 of round two.

Ronnie Vigil vs. Justin Moss in a 170 lb. title fight. The fighters threw hard and fast knees in the clinch before it went to the mat with Moss looking to lock up a guillotine choke. Vigil escaped and worked very hard GNP. Moss stayed calm, reversed position and worked GNP of his own. Briefly the fight came to standing, then it went to the ground again. In a scramble for position Vigil ended on top and flurried hard with strong GNP to get the title winning TKO at 2:56 of round one.

Long Lo vs. Brian Sullivan in a 145 lb. fight. The fighters traded hard and fast strikes with both showing impressive footwork. Sullivan was able to trap a kick and take the fight to the ground to work some GNP before Lo scrambled back to standing. On their feet the fighters traded combinations until Lo stunned Sullivan with punches, then dropped him. Lo followed with strong GNP to get the KO win at 2:09 of round one.

Peter Straub vs. Steve Stickler in a 170 lb. fight. Off of the clinch Straub got a takedown and on the mat he controlled position and worked GNP while Stickler was active with submission and escape attempts. Round two went to the mat early when Straub got a takedown off of the clinch. On the mat Straub worked GNP while Straub again scrambled for submission attempts. Momentarily the fight came to standing, but Straub scored another takedown and on the mat he set in the head and arm triangle choke to get the submission victory at 2:30 of round two.

Matt Johnson vs. Andrew Katers in a 155 lb. fight. Round one went to the mat due to a Johnson takedown. On the mat Johnson worked for GNP and positional control while Katers tried for submissions and escapes. Several times Katers got to his feet, but each time Johnson was able to take him back to the mat. Round two went to the mat early when Johnson took standing back control and tried for an RNC. On the mat Katers defended and escaped the choke before Johnson lost position and ended up with Katers inside his guard. Both fighters worked GNP and tried to improve position to end the round. Round three had hard striking exchanges with each able to stun the other. Johnson scored a trip takedown and on the mat he controlled position and worked GNP while Katers tried for escapes until the bell ended the round. The scorecards were read and the winner by unanimous decision was Matt Johnson.

John Zabala vs. John Ness in a 170 lb. fight. Zabala landed several strong punch flurries before Ness clinched and got a single leg takedown to work GNP. Zabala was able to work back to his feet and again land striking combinations until Ness clinched and ended the round with a takedown. Round two had Zabala landing good punches and kicks to start, then Ness got a takedown to control position and work GNP. In a scramble Zabala got back to his feet and the fighters clinched to end the round. Round three was almost all standing with Zabala controlling the striking exchanges and Ness shooting multiple times for takedowns, but each time Zabala escaped and came back to standing to land strikes. The scorecards were read and the winner was John Ness by unanimous decision.

Daniel Miranda vs. Cody Moore in a 155 lb. fight. The fighters traded even strikes before going to the mat with Moore on top working GNP and Miranda staying active with his guard and ending the round threatening with a triangle choke. Round two was mainly striking with Moore landing good knees and punches on the inside and flurrying well on the break. The last part of the round was in the clinch with both fighters landing good knee strikes. Round three was also all standing with Moore able to initiate and control the clinch while Miranda countered with knees on the inside. The round ended with the fighters separating and flurrying with strikes. The scorecards were read and the winner by unanimous decision was Cody Moore.

Jeremiah Talley vs. Eric Wild in a 185 lb. fight. Talley landed strong knees in the clinch to set up a takedown. On the ground Talley worked GNP to set up back control. Talley worked GNP from the back but the fight was stopped and brought to the feet for a restart when Talley landed an illegal back of the head strike. On the restart the fighters worked in and out of the clinch until the bell ended the round. Round two went to the clinch early with Talley scoring a takedown. Talley worked for position until the referee stood the fighters. On the restart Talley secured the clinch to set up a takedown and he worked GNP to end the round. Round three went to the mat early by way of a Talley takedown and he spent most of the round working GNP from mount and back control. Wild worked back to his feet and Talley put together several combinations that staggered Wild. The fight ended with the fighters clinched and Talley working knees to the legs. The scorecards were read and the winner was Jeremiah Talley by unanimous decision.

Shaun Cook vs. Pat Garland in a 170 lb. fight. Round one had even striking before Garland got a takedown to work GNP all round. Round two began with Cook having a strong striking flurry before Garland got a takedown to work GNP, control position and finish the round working for an RNC then a twister. Round three had each showing strong striking before Garland threw a powerful right hook to get the KO win at :51 of round three.

Sean Madden vs. Jamie Schoen in a 155 lb. kickboxing fight. The fighters traded even strikes from the outside including glancing head kicks from both. Schoen ended the round with a strong flurry. Round two saw both again working strikes from the outside and again both landed head kicks. Schoen landed several power punches and Madden answered with hard leg kicks. Round three saw a faster pace with Madden again working the leg kicks and Schoen favoring combination punching. The scorecards were read and the winner by split decision was Jamie Schoen.

KO of the night goes to Pat Garland for his one punch third round KO victory.

Fight of the night goes to Michael Mathews and Canaan Grigsby for three round hard fought back and forth fight.
